I recently had the pleasure of conducting a teleclass on creating multiple streams of income for a service-based business. The participants were made up of several different types of entrepreneurs who all had one thing in common — the awareness that having multiple streams of income is a sound business decision.

Many of my business coaching clients, whether they are professional organizers, redesigners, home stagers, coaches, or any other type of entrepreneur, know how important it is to have multiple streams of income in their business. But knowing that something is a smart business move and actually doing it are two different things! I try to help my clients m ove from “knowing” to “doing” by assisting them with taking action. So, grab your business umbrella because it’s raining streams of income!

Why Create and Offer Multiple Streams of Income?
Before you can take action, it is often extremely useful to figure out the “why” behind the actions. Creating and offering multiple streams of income for a service-based business helps you build a business with less work by taking your core business expertise and delivering it in multiple ways. You do the work once, repurpose it, and then keep using it and benefiting from it. This is often referred to as “leveraging” your content and expertise. Consider ways that you can move from delivering your content from 1 to 1, to 1 to many. Also, by offering options at several price points, you are able to reach a wider audience and assist more people.

What Kinds of Multiple Streams of Income Can You Offer?
Think of your business as an umbrella that has divisions underneath it. There are multiple ways to package your information, content and expertise. Think broadly! You can offer different types of services, products, and programs.

Your services can be delivered on site and in person, or via telephone or Skype. You can offer services to just one client at a time, or groups of individuals. You can price your services by project or by package. The sky is the limit. With the invention of newer and better technology tools, service offerings will continue to expand.

For products, listen to your prospects and clients. What do people keep asking you for? What could you create and offer that would solve some of your client’s problems, while allowing you to have a product that provides passive income? There are audio and video programs (CDs, MP3s, video, etc.), and print materials of all kind (e-books, tips booklets, White Papers, special reports, books, etc.). Think of what your clients and prospects need, and then provide them with the content in numerous ways. This is especially important if your clients are do-it-yourself kind of people and want to access your expertise on their own time.

For programs, use your imagination! There are teleclasses, webinars, group coaching programs, mastermind groups, boot camps, retreats, mentoring programs, training and certification programs, and membership continuity programs. The list is endless and grows every day as clever entrepreneurs come up with new ways to package their content and expertise.

What if I am Not Ready to Create Multiple Streams of Income?
Even if you are not ready to create your own multiple streams of income, you can become an affiliate of other business owners’ programs, services and products. This allows you to provide a wide range of offers to your prospects and clients, and receive passive income for introducing them to fantastic offers that you believe are in their best interest. It is a win-win for all involved: you, the business that you are an affiliate for, and your client.

How Can I Take Multiple Streams of Income a Step Further?
If you want to take it a step further, you can create your own affiliate program once you have several streams of income. Don’t be close minded and think, “But then I have to pay my affiliates a portion of my income.” Yes, you do, but they deserve it as they brought you the sale in the first place! Take it from someone that has an affiliate program – I love nothing more than knowing I have “sales representatives” out there letting their clients know about my great services, products and programs. I smile every time I pay out an affiliate commission!

Coaching Challenge: Look at your business a s an umbrella and figure out what natural streams of income fall under it. Choose one income stream this summer and create a service, product, or program that you can offer to your clients in order to leverage your content, and provide them with another way to access your expertise!

I coined an interesting phrase recently when I was facilitating one of the teleclasses for my group coaching program, DECIDE to be Organized. I was speaking to the group about how so many high functioning, busy, successful men and women have all of these passions and get overwhelmed with trying to decide which to do and which to implement. I referred to the act of managing all of those passions as “Passion Management” (instead of Time Management, Project Management or Energy Management). Everyone loved the phrase and I realized I was onto something.

Passion Management acknowledges that we do, indeed, have multiple passions. I, for one, always refer to myself as a multi-passionate entrepreneur and person. Also, Passion Management is a much more positive way of describing our dilemma of what to do with all of these great ideas. Time management and project management are terms that are not only overused but, unfortunately, can be a negative reminder of our lack of time, as opposed to a motivating factor that leads to productivity.

Passion Management is the ability to manage all of the passions you want to tackle in business and life. Here are some tips to help guide your Passion Management.

Pick a Passion

Most multi-passionate people are swimming in a sea of great ideas, and often have the drive to make them happen. The conundrum is which passion to pursue. My advice — pick a passion and go for it! Author and life coach Cheryl Richardson talked about this when I heard her speak in NYC years ago. She said that so many of her clients get stuck because they have so many great ideas and passions, but don’t know which to pursue. So they wind up pursuing… yup, you guessed it — nothing. Don’t fall v ictim to passion confusion! It is better to pick a passion and allow it to blossom and flourish than to be trapped under a mountain of too many great ideas. If you pick a passion and it does not go well or does not take off the way you wanted it to, that’s okay. Regroup, learn from your passion exercise, and pick a new one.

Tap Into Your Passion

One of the best ways to determine what you should (and want to) focus on is to tap into your passion. Sometimes we lose focus with our business or personal projects and we need to take the time to remind ourselves what we value and why we are staying the course. It is all too easy to get bogged down in details and tasks. Try to ask yourself, “Why am I really doing this project?” and see if there is a reason that relates back to one of your passions, whether perso nal or professional. For example, maybe you are feeling the crunch of trying to blog several times a week. Ask yourself why you set this schedule and whether it taps into one of your passions. If your passion is to write, then write! Do you need to stay on a particular schedule? Will anyone, but you, notice if you only write when your passion strikes? Sometimes we set ourselves up for failure, or more likely, undue stress, when we remain too regimented. Yes, I am a professional organizer and see the value in systems, processes, and timelines, trust me. But it is vital to check in and ask yourself: “Is this tapping into my passion?” If so, it will help propel you forward and remind you why you are doing this particular task or project. If you realize this task or project does not tap into any of your passions, you may decide to abandon the project, delegate the task, or reevaluate whether you want and need to continue it.

Ignore the Naysayers

Often, you are making actual progress towards achieving your passions, but someone tries to sabotage you. Try not to let this derail your efforts! You need to stay the course, despite what they say. If you are truly passionate about the project, you will be able to withstand attacks. The famous life coach Martha Beck talks about surrounding yourself with people who can be your “believing eyes.” I love this idea! Adopt it and use it as your own. Stay away from the Negative Nellies, and surround yourself with people who believe in your passionate goals and will help you achieve them. Passion is contagious and can not only serve as strong motivation for you, but as inspiration for others. People notice passion. In fact, in my opinion, people often notice passion more than they notice productivity!

Celebrate Your Passion Successes

When we take on a project or task and successfully complete it, we often reward ourself at the c ompletion. But when we pursue a passion, we may not have any reward system built in. In some situations, it is hard to determine when we have “completed” a passion. Passions are often ongoing. They can be a particular way of approaching a topic, or a passion can be a mindset or belief. But it is important to come up with some way of rewarding your successes and milestones when pursuing your passions. Figure out ways to evaluate whether you have achieved a certain level of success for a particular passion. The more successful you feel at each step, the more apt you are to keep moving on the path towards achieving your passion goals. And most passionate people just want to keep the passion going! After my preview call for the DECIDE to be Organized Group Coaching Program last week, many of you have sent in questions, which I appreciate. It made me realize that many of you may have the same questions… so here’s a look at a few common questions and the answers so that you can make an informed decision about joining the DECIDE program.

Is the DECIDE program delivered online or on the telephone? Please explain the format.
The program is delivered via teleclass, which means all you need is a telephone to participate. You’ll receive a special dial-in number and access code. Of course, if you want to be in front of your computer while we are on the live teleclass, you can do so. You receive the 58-page workbook when you register, and can choose to follow along on your computer, but you don’t have to.

What if I can’t make the live calls? Will that affect what I get out of the program?
Absolutely not! I’ve created this course to fit a variety of busy lifestyles. After each week’s class I’ll post the audios – so you can listen on the web, or download an .MP3 file – that way you can listen at the gym, during your commute, while runni ng errands or working around the house. If you still have questions about the material on the call you missed, just email me with any questions or comments. You can listen to the audios over and over if you wish. And you can come back to the program months or years later to refresh or deepen your learning.

What if I don’t know which organizing projects I want to work on?
Part of the process of the DECIDE group coaching program is learning to discover what your organizing goals are, which projects you want to work on, and what will bring you the most satisfaction if accomplished.

Does the DECIDE program deliver great value for the cost of the investment?
Yes! Do some research. You’ll find this is one of the most affordable programs (and the most comprehensive) of its kind. I have kept the cost down so that many people can access my services in an affordable manner and get the assistance they need. The cost of the program is a fraction of what it would cost to work with me one-on-one. Yet, you still get personalized access to me due to the small size of the group, and the chance to learn from other participants too!

I’ve tried to get organized in the past, but did not have much success — how is your approach different?
Hopefully the preview call I did on February 7th gave you a little window into my approach. Trust me, if you enjoyed that call, you’re going to LOVE the actual program as we dig a lot deeper!

I can’t make you listen to the calls, or work on your organizing projects in between the calls. But I can tell you that the content I’ll be covering and materials provided are powerful! When are the classes being held?
The DECIDE program runs for 6 weeks, with 90 minute calls every Tuesday evening, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. (Eastern), from February 21st to March 27th.

I have a busy life – I’m not sure if I can devote enough time to the program.
I completely understand! But here’s the beauty of the program: there’s absolutely no “right” way to do it.

If you can’t listen to all of the calls, or do all of the exercises, don’t fret! You have the audios and workbook to go back to for years to come.

Even if you only walk away with one amazing new insight (which is almost impossible, because I’ll be sharing a TON!) — that one insight can affect your overall behavior and results in a serious boost in productivity which can help you achieve results at home, in business, and in life. I promise.

I ‘m thinking of taking this program at a later date – when will you be teaching this again?
I usually offer this program in February and October. But this program isn’t on my calendar again for 2012. There are other programs that I need to make room for that are launching later this year (great stuff coming — keep on the lookout!). So there’s no guarantee that I’ll be repeating the DECIDE program in the near future. In fact, it may be the last time I offer it live…
